Hot. Sweaty. With rising tempers and chance of tearful showers. Misery index right about 99%.
Today’s going to be tough. Nothing’s working as it ought to. There’s no work or Netflix to distract us. We are over the initial gratitude that it wasn’t worse. We’re tired – many different kinds of tired. And things are a bit smelly. Us. The fridge. People we love. Eeew.
In your misery you’ll be tempted to ask:
“Why the hell didn’t THEY ….?” Fill in the blank with whatever someone else should have done that would make it better for you.
Because in the perfect crystal ball of hindsight it was clear where the storm would go and how big it would be and what it would trash. We don’t like the unpredictable.
If disasters have taught me anything it’s that I really have no idea what’s going on unless I’m in the middle of it and working it. And then I really don’t have a full picture.
It’s so tempting and easy to lob grenades of criticism at institutions- because we forget there are people like us there trying to figure out how to navigate this latest wave of upheaval. Trying to meet their responsibilities. Fix what the storm broke.
Encourage the people working on restoration and recovery and help those around you. Nothing takes our minds off our misery like lessening someone else’s.
As usual – wrote this for me and maybe for you too.
Love,
Angela
