Beyond Here There Be Dragons

We are a species in search of a new narrative, a new mythology, one that weaves our scientific understanding around and into the vast unknowable forces that buffet us to and fro. One that allows us to look up and inward for answers to human vulnerability and suffering instead of turning on and blaming ourselves and one another.

We need our deities to be all knowing – so that we can deposit our questions with them. Letting go of our relentless pursuit of WHY all hell broke loose and move on to how we care for one another in the midst of it.

This is earth. Not heaven. We are not the all-knowing all-powerful deities we’d like to be. We do the best we can. Beyond us there be dragons*. Some named Helene.

*notation on old maps. When mapmakers got to the edge of the “known world” they would write “beyond here there be dragons” an expression of both awe and fear.
